Abdullah recently earned IAEE’s Certified in Exhibition Management® (CEM) designation. Here, he shares how this designation has strengthened his professional credibility, deepened his expertise in exhibition and event management, and opened doors to greater career opportunities and international recognition.

How has the CEM designation helped in your career?

Earning the CEM signals that you have achieved a globally recognized standard of excellence in exhibitions and events management. This boosts your credibility among peers, employers and clients, showing that you possess advanced knowledge and a commitment to industry best practices.

The program covers strategic planning, operations, marketing, safety, and financial management of exhibitions and events. Having this structured expertise helps you manage events more effectively, make smarter decisions and innovate in creating impactful participant experiences.

Why is it important to maintain the CEM designation?

Maintaining the CEM designation is important because it demonstrates a continued commitment to professional excellence and lifelong learning in the exhibitions and events industry. It ensures your knowledge stays current with global trends, standards and best practices, which is critical in a field that evolves quickly with new technologies, safety requirements and customer expectations.

What made you want to obtain your CEM designation?

I pursued the CEM designation because I wanted to strengthen my expertise in exhibition and event management through a globally recognized program. It was important for me to gain structured knowledge, elevate my professional credibility, and position myself for greater career opportunities and international recognition while also joining a strong network of industry leaders.

What advice would you give to an aspiring individual who wants to apply for the CEM program?

I would advise them to approach the program with a clear plan and commitment, because the CEM is not just about passing courses, but about truly absorbing practical knowledge that can be applied immediately in their career. They should also take advantage of the global network of peers and instructors, as the connections and shared insights are just as valuable as the coursework itself. Most importantly, see the CEM not as an endpoint, but as a stepping stone for continuous growth and leadership in the exhibitions and events industry.

How did you start your career in this industry?

I started my career in the exhibitions and events industry by taking on roles that allowed me to be directly involved in event planning and execution, which gave me hands-on experience with both the operational and strategic aspects of the field. Over time, I discovered my passion for creating impactful experiences that connect people and add value to organizations, which motivated me to pursue further professional development, including the CEM designation.

How have you made a difference with your show or with working with a client by applying the knowledge you gained by obtaining your CEM designation?

By applying the knowledge I gained from the CEM designation, I was able to introduce strategic planning frameworks and best practices that improved both efficiency and attendee experience in my shows. For example, I implemented enhanced safety and risk management protocols, streamlined exhibitor engagement strategies, and optimized event design to deliver more value for clients. These improvements not only elevated the quality and professionalism of the events but also strengthened long-term client relationships and trust.

What did you like most about the CEM Learning Program?

What I liked most about the CEM Learning Program was its practical, real-world approach – the courses were not just theory, but directly connected to challenges we face in exhibitions and events. I also appreciated the opportunity to learn from global industry experts and exchange insights with peers, which expanded my perspective and gave me tools I could immediately apply to my work.
